Speck-ectomy
Femtosecond laser ablation is used to perform intracellular microsurgery, ablating apoptosis-inducing ASC speck protein aggregates, allowing infected cells to survive and undergo mitosis. This type of structural knockout is valuable in illuminating the mechanism of ASC-induced apoptosis. More info...

Mitotic Forces
We aim to infer the mechanics of polar ejection forces acting on chromosomes during mitosis by performing intracellular microsurgery on mitotic cells. Femtosecond laser ablation is used to cut the arms off mitotic chromosomes and their movement is tracked via reconstruction of multi-slice phase contrast microscopy images. More info coming soon...

Nano-machining
Ablation by femtosecond optical breakdown at critical intensity is capable of ablating features at resolutions far exceeding the diffraction limited spot size. We have achieved features as small as 10nm in glass.

3D Microfluidics
Traditional microfluidic fabrication techniques depend primarily on 2D photolithographic processing. Machining of microfluidic channels via optical breakdown avoids this limitation, making complex 3D geometries easily possible, with nanoscale resolution.

In Situ Protein Patterning
Selective ablation of surface-bound biomolecules allows manipulation of the extracellular microenvironment of active cells in situ. In particular, we are examining the chemotactic response of neurons to neurotrophins such as ephrins and NGF.
