Introduction

The goal was to make a fun and easy to use device for music generation, with a touch-based visual interface.  Based on products like Fruity-loops (electronic music generation software) and the Tenori-on (a novel electronic instrument) we implemented a similar button based interface that outputs midi commands to a midi-keyboard.  The interface is simply a 2-D array of 80 buttons mapped virtually to a touch-pad/VGA display screen.  Ultimately, one is able to freely compose 8 different “pages” of music (each page being 8 beats in length) and organize the sounds on a “top-page,” for a total of 64 beats of music.  Each page and every instrument within a page can be independently muted, and the beats per minute is adjustable on-the-fly.  Various instruments can be programmed, and the music can be started/stopped/reset and cleared with a single button press.
