EECS 401 HW 11

Fri, 7 Apr 2000 10:51:58

I just discovered that some of the Homework 11 problems contain notes to myself that were supposed to be "hidden text". No doubt these will be confusing.

Accordingly, please download a revised version of Homework 11 from the class website.

Also, if you need an extension, you may hand in Homework 11 on Monday April 17 by 11 AM, without penalty. There will be a box in Room 4230.

Homework Modification

Thu, 6 Apr 2000 15:15:52

It turns out that in problem 1, the given density does not integrate to one. So there is no good solution.

So ... let's omit Problem 1.

401 -- grading of game show problem

Fri, 24 Mar 2000 10:42:06 -0500

In grading the game show problem, I tore off the last page of Homework set 7. If yours wasn't placed at the back of the homework set, I probably missed it. If I did miss it, please bring it to me and I will grade it. (It is graded out of 15 points.)

The graded game show problems that were not picked up in class today are sitting outside my office.

EECS 401 -- regarding Homework set 8

Wed, 15 Mar 2000 12:08:41

Problem 3:
Note: A big part of this problem is identifying what it is the problem statement gives you.
Hint: Before finding the pdf, find the cdf. To do the latter, you might want to use the law of xxxxxxx.

Problem 4:
Correction: replace "distribution function" with "cumulative distribution function"

Problem 5:
Correction: The integrand should be "F_Y(y) f_X(y)" not "F_Y(y) f_X(x)"

Next exam

Wed, 8 Mar 2000 12:44:56 -0500

As discussed in class Monday, the next exam is scheduled for Wednesday, March 22, 7 to 8:30 or 9PM.

There were a couple of students who said they had conflicts. I've made special arrangements with one student.

If the other student or anyone else needs to request special arrangements, please send me email ASAP and please come talk to me, also ASAP.

As I will be leaving town this afternoon and not available the rest of this week, please see me next Monday.

EECS 401, HW 5 Solutions

Tue, 15 Feb 2000 12:23:55 -0500
Correction to problem 4b:
It should be: Pr(X>10) = 1 - Pr(X<=10) = .8815 .

Problem 2(c), the first approach, the answer should be (1-p)/(2-p) instead of p/2.

This is why we ordinarily wait til the grader has finished grading the homework before issuing corrections.

D.N.

P.S. The grader just returned HW 5. They'll be outside my office. I'll also bring them to class on Monday.

Midterm Review Session

The review session of midterm1 will hold on Monday (Feb. 14) 7-8 pm in 1005 DOW.

HW 4 extension

Thu, 3 Feb 2000 12:56:38

Since Homework Set 4 is so long, I would like to extend the due date until class on Monday.
In addition, both Helen and I will have additinal office hours tomorrow afternoon.

Helen: 1:30-2:30
DLN: 2:30-3:30

The next homework will be assigned on Monday.
I'm sorry that I underestimated the amount of work for this assignment.

HW 4 clarifications

Thu, 3 Feb 2000 09:52:31

Problem 8: Ignore the "(a)". It should not have been there.

Problem 15: F2 and F3 are not intended to be identical. In particular F2 is not supposed to have any vertical segments. That's the way it appears on my monitor, but unfortunately, that's not the way the printout appears.

Correction to Homework #3

Tue, 25 Jan 2000 15:29:42

In Homework3 problem 7(b), "the landing point" should be corrected to "the center". So, the whole sentense will be: " Determine the conditional probability that the spec is both to the north and east of the center, given that it is less that 5 inches from the center."

Helen

Correction to Homework #2

Delete Problem 5 from Homework Set 2 because it was already assigned in Homework Set

Problem 6 parts b and c:
the notation FE means F intersect E.
Likewise FE^c means F intersect E^c
(omitting the intersection sign is a convention that some people use (like omitting a multiplication sign). I had not intended to omit it.)

Problem 11: Ignore the last line: "Roberts, 2.25 ... assumption)"
That was a note to myself that I forgot to delete.

D.N.

Correction to Homework #1

Problem 1. 1-11, p. 22: this problem refers to problems 1-7 and 1-9.
There's a typo in the formula for the sample variance in problem 1-9.
The subscript "n-1" near the end of the formula should be "n".

Problem 3: skip part d. (you will do this part in problem 8.

Problem 4. skip part e. (this is getting to far ahead of class)
