EECS graduate student Hector Garcia won first place in the technical paper competition at the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) national conference, which took place October 28 – November 1 in Washington DC.
Hector's paper is entitled "SPINTO: High-performance Energy Minimization of Spin-glasses with Applications to Adiabatic Quantum Computing." The paper describes a framework for utilizing high-performance algorithms to simulate natural energy minimization in spin systems and to study its potential for solving hard computational problems.
The competition was for papers related to the technical fields of engineering and science. Papers were judged based on originality, societal impact, and completeness.
Hector is a graduate student working with Igor Markov in the Quantum Computing Group. Hector's further results on the SPINTO project will be presented at the IEEE/ACM
Design Automation and Test in Europe (DATE) conference in Dresden, Germany in March 2010.
