Amit Patel, a third year doctoral student in the Electrical Engineering
program, was awarded a 2010 Science, Mathematics & Research for
Transformation (SMART) Fellowship to support his research in the area of
Applied Electromagnetics.
Patel is working with Prof.
Anthony Grbic on the theory and development of textured electromagnetic
surfaces. The impedance of the surfaces is manipulated in order to control
guided waves and directional radiation. Low profile and high directivity
antennas based on these surfaces are being developed.
About the Award
The Science, Mathematics And Research
for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been
established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support outstanding
undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The Scholarship covers full
tuition, a stipend, related benefits, and employment placement after
graduation. The 2011 SMART Scholarship application will open August 1, 2010.
