EECS 498 (598): Performance Systems: Mobile Phones as Musical Instruments

In this course we learn how to design, implement and use musical instruments using contemporary mobile smart phones. We will cover multimedia programming for the devices, sensor-technology, human-computer interaction, as well as performance practice, ensemble play and conducting. The goal of the course is to teach the student to build their own mobile musical instruments, write new pieces for these instruments and develop ensemble play for these pieces. The final of the course will be a public concert where the students perform their works.
