He has contributed foundational work in both cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, and he is especially well known for his seminal work using neuroimaging to understand the brain processes underlying human cognition. His more recent work has expanded the fields of cognitive and affective neuroscience to include human development and genetics. 2008 marks the 30th anniversary of the publication of Chronometric Explorations of Mind, which resulted from the Paul M. Fitts Lectures given by Professor Posner in 1976. He will extend its themes in his present Fitts Lecture.
