COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING - How to Apply

The Computer Science and Engineering Graduate Program is part of the University of Michigan's Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Prospective graduate students for the CSE Program submit applications through the Rackham Graduate School.

1. Fill out the application:


Use the Rackham Graduate School online application. Apply online through embark.com
(You may start your application, save the information, and then return to it as many times as necessary before final submission.)

1a. Codes you will need:

  • Computer Science and Engineering MS/MSE Program: 00148
  • Computer Science and Engineering Ph.D Program: 00147

Subplan (Major area of study): Please enter one of the following on the application in the
subplan area and also on the top of your statement of purpose:

  • Hardware
  • Intelligent Systems
  • Software
  • Theory
  • VLSI
  • Interactive Systems

1b. Online application must include:

  • Application fee. Use a credit card for payment.
  • Statement of Purpose and Personal Statement. The Statement of Purpose is a statement about your academic research and career goals. The Personal Statement is a statement about the effects of your life experiences on your decision to pursue a graduate degree.
  • Electronic Image of your Transcript(s). The online application includes instructions for converting paper documents into electronic files.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation. Electronic submission of recommendation letters is recommended. (If not submitting electronically, see paper instructions below.) At least two letters should be from faculty.
  • GRE Scores. Request scores from ETS. Institution code: 1839.

International applicants must also include:

- Use your name (first and last/family) as it appears on your passport or other legal documents.

- Do Not send duplicate items by mail.

2. Send one official set of transcripts TO Rackham.
  • You must provide one set of official transcripts, certificates and diplomas to the Rackham Graduate School. It is your responsibility to request the release of any such records from the institutions involved. If you have a foreign transcript, you must include official transcripts, certificates and diplomas in the original language and an official English translation.

3. If submitting paper letters of recommendation:

  • If you are not able to submit your letters of recommendation electronically with the online application, you may download the recommendation form from Rackham's website:

4. Important Deadlines:

We admit students for the Fall Term only. (No applications for Winter or Spring/Summer will be accepted.) Applications received after the deadlines below will not be processed.

5. Financial Assistance:

To apply for departmental financial aid, answer the appropriate question on the application. No separate application is required. You may also wish to refer to the other sources of financial aid links provided on the CSE Admissions page.

Decisions for admission and financial aid are made separately. If you are being awarded departmental financial assistance, you will be notified. You will not be notified if you are not being offered departmental financial assistance.


We are not usually able to respond immediately to requests for application status. Each application is carefully reviewed. Decisions are made throughout the academic year; therefore it is best to allow us until March 15th before making a status request.

All submitted documents become the property of the University of Michigan and cannot be returned or forwarded.
