Linear feedback design remains the workhorse of the control engineering community. There is a well-developed theory of linear feedback systems dating back the seminal work of Bode and Nyquist. This theory describes fundamental design limitations and tradeoffs that are present in any linear feedback design, regardless of the specific controller. Research into the theory of feedback design limitations is ongoing in the Control Laboratory, of current interest is the problem of design limitations imposed by the presence of a Gaussian communication channel in the feedback loop. Research is motivated by a wide range of applications to automotive, manufacturing, aerospace, and military systems.
