Solid state electronic and optoelectronic devices are critically dependent on the properties of constituent materials and heterostructures. There is a broad array of research activity on materials for these devices including the epitaxial growth of III-V and II-VI compound semiconductors, organic semiconductors, semiconducting and semi-metallic nanowires, and ferroelectric oxides. Emphasis is placed on the application of these materials to high-performance devices including laser diodes, photodiodes, solar cells, high frequency electronics, flat panel displays, white lighting, and novel sensor devices.
