DESUMA Installation Instructions

Requirements

  • Java Runtime Environment - Version 1.4.* is recommended
  • UMDES Executables - Integrated with DESUMA 1.5

Procedure

  1. Click on the DESUMA installer link for your platform and save the file to your hard drive.
  2. Double click on the downloaded file to run the installer.
  3. Before using DESUMA, you must choose a working directory in which to store your data files (the default is the installation directory). To do this, in the DESUMA window open the View menu on the toolbar and click Options. (Note for Vista users: due to security restrictions in Vista, the working directory must be set outside the Program Files directory in order for DESUMA to operate correctly)

Java Downgrade Instructions

DESUMA does not work properly on all systems running Java 1.5 or above. If DESUMA does not work properly on your system please follow the following instructions to install Java 1.4:

Option 1 - Remove previous Java version and install Java 1.4

Follow these instructions if you do not need to continue running your current Java version, and instead want to run only Java 1.4:
  1. Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove the current version of Java.
  2. Go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html and click on the "Download J2SE JRE" link.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to download and run the appropriate installation executable.

Option 2 - Run Java 1.4 alongside current version of Java.

Follow these instructions if you wish to continue running your current version of Java, and use Java 1.4 only for DESUMA:
  1. Go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html and click on the "Download J2SE JRE" link.
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions to download and run the appropriate installation executable. Note the installation directory for later use.
  3. Create a shortcut to the DESUMA Jar file. If DESUMA was installed in the default directory, the path will be "C:\Program Files\desuma\DESUMA.jar".
  4. Right click on the shortcut you created and click properties.
  5. Click on the shortcut tab. Add the following string to the beginning of what is already in the Target box (with the quotation marks): "JAVADIR\bin\java.exe" -jar, where JAVADIR is the directory where Java 1.4 was installed. For example, if Java 1.4 was installed in C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_17 and the Target box previously read "C:\Program Files\desuma\DESUMA.jar", when you are finished it should read (with the quotation marks):
    "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_17\bin\java.exe" -jar "C:\Program Files\desuma\DESUMA.jar"
  6. Use this shortcut whenever you wish to run DESUMA.
