CAEN people - if you are having trouble accessing the Java compiler and interpreter, and using swselect doesn't solve the problem, use your ITD account or use the full path name to invoke the compiler and interpreter:/usr/um/jdk-1.1.5/bin/javac and /usr/um/jdk-1.1.5/bin/java

Programming Style

All assignments are due in Room 1213 EECS or in the envelope on 1829 East Hall before 5pm the Wednesday after they are assigned

• Jan 8 - Read: Chapters 1 and 2
  The "Hello World" Application and The "Hello World" Applet and the Applet tag for HTML.

  Programming assignment:
  The purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to beginning Java programming concepts and to get you to learn how to edit, compile, and print Java source code files, how to run Java applications, how to run Java applets, and to learn how to print the output of your Java applications and applets.

  Write a Java application, using the class style, similar to the HelloWorldApp.java in the tutorial that will print your name and three lines of information about yourself. Write a Java applet, using the class style, similar to the HelloWorld.java applet in the tutorial that will print your name and three lines of information about yourself on one of your web pages.

  Hand in:
  

  • Hardcopy of the application and its output

  • email me the URL of your applet and the URL of your homepage, if you would like it made public.

• Jan 15 - Read: Chapters 4 (error p 149 - "private protected" is not supported in Java 1.1) and 6 (p 188-201)
  The Nuts and Bolts of the Java Language.

  Programming assignment:
  The purpose of this program is to give you an opportunity to practice loops and branching statements.

  Write both an application and an applet that prints out a random number of pieces of advice, chosen randomly from a list of 8 or more. Be sure no piece of advice is displayed more than once.

  Hand in:
  Hardcopy of both the applet and the application.
  Hardcopy of 3 runs of your application.

• Jan 22 - Read: Chapters 3 and 5 and 6 (p 180-187)
  Object-Oriented Programming Concepts and Creating Classes and Objects and Classes and Creating Interfaces and Creating and Using Packages

  Programming assignment:
  The purpose of this program is to give you a chance to look at other people's java code and see how they organize their classes, and also to give you some ideas about possible projects you might want to do for the class.

  • Find source code for a cool applet.
  • Modify it in some way.
  • Format it according to my style specifications
  • Put it on your class page.
  • Be sure your class hierarchy includes all the classes in the applet
  • Be sure you give the original author credit
    • on your web page
    • in your program header
  • On the hardcopy of your applet code:
    • underline all the class names
    • circle the instance variable declarations
    • put a rectangle around the method definitions
    • put a * next to all the class variables and class methods defined or used.

  Hand in:
  the annotated hardcopy of your applet code with the URL of the original applet and the URL of your modified applet.

• Jan 29 - Read: Chapter 9
  Managing Inheritance and Subclasses, Superclasses, and Inheritance and Using Graphics Primitives and the Graphics class

  Programming assignment:
  The purpose of this program is to give you an opportunity to practice using inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction, and encapsulation.

  Write another subclass of the CourseCircle class and a subclass of the ColoredCircle class. Include at least 2 constructors for each of your new classes and access functions for the new data. Write a Java application that creates at least one instance of each class (mine and yours - 4 all together) and uses access methods to print out the values of the variables. Write a Java applet that draws at least one object from each of the classes - mine and yours.

  Think about what you want to do for your project. (You can have 1 partner.)

  Hand in:
  hardcopy of your new subclasses, your application, your applet and output from your application.

• Feb 5 - Read: Chapters 10 (pp 335 - 348) and 14
  Overview of Applets and Life Cycle of an Applet and Methods for Milestones and Applet security and the Applet class and the Applet tag for HTML

  Assignment:
  The purpose of the first part of this assignment is to help you get a feel for how applets run in a browser and to help you understand the purpose for each of the applet methods. The purpose of the second part is to have you develop the first draft of your project design.

  Use the form handed out in class to make a list of all the things you can do to an applet while it is running, e.g., move to a different page, scroll the page, etc, and tell which methods are called for each thing you do. Use the ExtendedSimple applet to find out which methods are called.

  Decide on a project to work on for the rest of the class. It can be anything you want, but it must

  • use the following classes/interfaces: Color, Font, Image, AudioClip
  • have a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and handle events
  • have animation
  If you want to work in a group, you may choose 1 partner.

  Prepare a program header for your project and a rough sketch of the graphical user interface (GUI).

  Hand in:
  The form describing the things you tried while running the ExtendedSimple applet and which methods were called for each.
  The program header describing your project and the GUI sketch.

  Programming assignment:
  Start your project by adding the components you will need. The components must show up, but they don't have to do anything.

  Handling Errors Using Exceptions

  Programming assignment:
  Grade a class mate's program.
  Program - 50 points for having everything required:
  (-5 each thing that is missing from the code, -1 each stupid line of code)

  • color

  Style - 50 points for having good style.
  ( int i for loops is ok, standard Sun parameter names are ok)
  -1 if they don't indent 3 spaces
  -1 for each occurence of every other style error

  The other person's program with your name and the grade you gave them on it.

• Apr 2 - Read: Chapters 15, 16, 18 - 22
  Input and Output Streams and Custom Networking and Security and What's New in 1.1.

  Programming assignment:
  Work on your project.

• Apr 9 - Java project demos - the demos will be held from 3-5pm in the Media Union in the 3rd floor PC training rooms A&B. You can also set up at any of the Suns up there - just let people know where you are so they can come see your stuff.

  Hand in before you leave: Final hard copy of your code and critiques of at least 3 other projects

• Apr 16 - Final Exam
