Michigan Student Assembly
I am currently serving as a representative of the Rackham Graduate School on the Michigan Student Assembly (MSA), the central student government of the University of Michigan. I am also currently serving as the Vice Chair of the Rules & Elections Committee and Co-Chair of the Disability Issues Select Committee.
Goals as a representative
- Determine the feasibility of implementing a cap on tuition increases. My suggestion is to set the maximum allowed percent increase to be twice the percent increase in the Consumer Price Index in the previous year. For example, the increase in the Consumer Price Index last year was 4.1 percent, so a tuition increase of more than 8.2 percent would be forbidden.
- Develop the Disability Issues Select Committee to the point where it could be a viable permanent commission of the Assembly.
- Create a notetaking/tutoring/mentor matching service for students with disabilities. See Disability Issues Select Committee goals for more details.
- Guarantee a seat on the Assembly to every school, college and academic division listed in the Office of the Registrar’s enrollment reports.
- Work on the academic calendar to guarantee a reasonable length for winter break.
- Work on repealing Rogers' Law.
- Create a grade replacement option for a limited number of credits.
- Create a UM/Ann Arbor wiki, currently code-named "Michipedia" (not to be confused with Michipedia.com, which is constantly being vandalized [and can crash Firefox!]).
- Work on creating a student regent position.
Goals for the Disability Issues Select Committee
- Put on a successful Disability Awareness Week during the week of March 24-28.
- Create a notetaking/tutoring/mentor matching service for students with disabilities. Consider collaborating with the Academic Affairs Commission to expand this to all students, but make it accessibile, disability-aware, and privacy/anonymity-aware.
- Improve the campus climate for students with disabilities.
- Make progress on the accessibility of campus buildings to individuals with disabilities.
