- The compile button doesn't work
This problem tends to occur because people use File->Open and open the schematic file only instead of using File->Open Project and opening the project file.
This usually means that Quartus has decided to reset the Device to the "Stratix II: AUTO" default instead of the "Cyclone II: EP2C35F672C6"
- Help! My toolbar disappeared!
With a schematic open and in the foreground, go to the "Tools" menu and select "Customize Block Editor". Check the "Block Editor" checkbox. This should bring the toolbar back, possibly in a separate window. To dock the toolbar back into the window, carefully click on a grey part of the toolbar that is NOT a button and drag it back into place. (Mad props to ENGIN 100 GSI Nate Gallaher for figuring out how to do this.)
