Ephemerides

I'm all done! In less than 24 hours from now I'll have touched down at LAX, and I'll probably be eating dinner at home. Woohoo!

Maybe it's because I don't cook and I don't eat many vegetables.. but it's never been clear to me what the differences are between scallions, shallots, leeks and green onions, and between coriander, cilantro, and parsley.

Being done with finals and therefore having nothing better to do at the moment, I went and looked for pictures of each. If you care, you can try and guess what is what.

Note: this is somewhat tricky, because out of parsley, cilantro, and coriander, two of the three are actually synonyms. And out of shallots, scallions, leeks, and green onions, two of THEM are actually synonyms.

Ok, now while looking up those pictures I was reminded of scallops. (Because shallots sounds like scallops.) So now. Can you tell the difference between scallops, clams, mussels, and oysters?

(Hmm. I don't think I've ever seen a scallop inside its shell like that before.)

If you want to know the answers, just look in the html source and see what the filenames of the images are. Or if your browser shows the file name when you right click on an image.. even easier.

By the way, aren't giant clams somewhat scary and disturbing? Much more so than the easter bunny or the tooth fairy.

Well, that was a weird post. Oh, I found this website that has a bunch of puzzles. So next time maybe I'll post one of them.

One day! Tomorrow I'll be in LA.

I'm writing this from the lab since my cable modem at home is down (AGAIN!). It had been working quite well for the past couple of weeks. Oh well. Maybe it'll be fixed by the time I get home tonight. (My guess: not.)

This may be the longest time that I've gone without posting! Oooh. I never thought I'd keep this thing so updated when I started it.

Like everyone else, I'm going to say Yay, my semester is almost over. I'm done with classes and projects, and all I have left is two finals on Friday. They used to be back-to-back with 30 minutes in between, but one of them was moved slightly so now it's back-to-back with 1:30 in between. Woop.

And the day after that is my flight home. Yay! Today it was in the high 30's or low 40's, and I was thinking wow! It's so warm today, I don't even need to wear my gloves and beanie outside. And a lot of snow is melting. But I wonder what it will feel like to be in 70 degree weather again (if only for 8 days). I guess the bad part will be re-adjusting once I come back here.

..Only 3 days left!

**

Update: hey, whaddya know, it IS working. Therefore I shall update again.

I was just thinking, I won't have an orthodontist appointment until January, and my last one was in November, so my "clear" ties are going to be all yellowy by the time I'm in New York. Pleasant, eh?

Against my better judgment, I spent the past day or so doing two things: installing my new mp3-playing car cd player, and making it possible to upload pictures per Ian's suggestion.

Both things are done. Woohoo! In fact, it's more general: you can actually upload any kind of file. It seems to work for me. I hope it works for you. Let me know if you have any problems.

Days left: 8

Hey all. Check Allan's page for more updates on Leon. Especially note the one about sending Leon your get-well messages.. most of you have been emailed directly already, but in case you didn't get one, take a look.

Oh heck, I'll just reproduce the contents here.

Dear all,

As many of you may already be aware, Leon Lee was involved in an auto accident on the weekend of 11/16. The good news is that he is well on his way to recovery by all accounts that I have come by. In fact, I am told that the pace of his recovery has been remarkably fast. The injuries he suffered in this accident were severe enough to force a 2 week stay at the Intensive Care Unit at the UCLA Medical Center. They included complications with his liver, respiratory damage, as well as external wounding. He faces what will likely be a difficult time of recuperation and physical therapy. I am told that he will soon be released from the hospital confines so that he may continue his recovery at his home, with his family.

I know that many of you would like to send Leon your wishes towards a speedy and complete recovery. I'm sure he'd love to know how many of us care about his condition. So to this end, a booklet/compilation of messages, notes, and well-wishes from Leon's friends is going to be put together and given to him as soon as a respectable amount have been gathered. I am having anyone who would like to contribute a message to this compilation email the message to alan@law.ucla.edu. Make it as long or short as you'd like. I thought it would be best to keep the concept simple, so it will simply be the set of messages printed and bound, and then given directly to Leon.

I am having this email sent to anyone I know that has known Leon directly. If you know someone who may want to contribute who might not have received this email(I don't have a very comprehensive email address book), please forward it along. If you don't know what to say to Leon, just keep in mind that there's nothing wrong with a short, simple, straightforward message.

So.. while you're putting off your Chistmas shopping, procrastinating with your finals studying, or finishing off your turkey day leftovers(all of the above for about half of you), think of what you want to say, and then send your messages to alan@law.ucla.edu. Thanks.

All the Best,
Alan Mih

Guess what freeway exit I passed today. 8 Mile Rd. I bet Eminem was right there by the offramp.

Gasp, xanga seems to be down. I can't read anyone's blog! Let me summarize what they WOULD have written. If I offend you.. well.. that's what the message board is for. HEHEH. Let us begin.

Ian: Sunday. Waugh! I watched one of my 5,352,838,305,283 DVDs, (but I still have less than Jenny does) or I went upstairs or downstairs to watch TV shows with some girls. I did some wushu. I drove a lot. I graded some papers. Finally, I left hilarious yet nonsensical messages on Kevin's message board.

Kristin: My internet has been sporadic. The kitten is so cute! I'm thankful for turkey (dark meat only) and friends (dark meat only?) and stuff like that. I bowled a 600. I have to go to school tomorrow =( I will let Kevin drive my car when he gets home.

Leah: I'm so busy doing nursing stuff! And I hung out with the boyfriend. The boyfriend keeps forgetting about me. I don't have class tomorrow! Neener! I plan to go snowboarding every day from now until March. At least, that's what the boyfriend plans to do.

Ken: I went out with a bunch of girls. Here are some pictures if you don't believe me. Whales ejaculate 2,535,858 tons of sperm per second and that is why I flipped a brand new car.

Jenny (if she had a blog): I drank 9,838,872 glasses of water. Then I had lunch. Luckily I have Kristin to pee out all that water I drank. Then I took a nap. Then I worked on my project, for which Kevin gave me a great inspiration! Then I had coffee. The end. Oh wait, I had more water after that.

Haha. I hope that was as entertaining for you as it was for me. I hope no one kills me.

13 more days. That means I better get cracking on my end of semester projects and stuff.
