NSF announced two projects to expand the frontiers of cyber-physical systems. Students in the graduate level course, Integrated Analog/Digital Interface Circuits (EECS 511), competed for cash prizes while presenting their final design projects thanks to the support of Analog Devices, Inc. An international team of researchers including Prof. Kevin Fu has demonstrated that the type of sensors that pick up the rhythm of a beating heart in implanted cardiac defibrillators and pacemakers are vulnerable to tampering. The researchers were able to forge an erratic heartbeat with radio frequency electromagnetic waves in controlled laboratory conditions.  [More Info]

Prof. Pallab Bhattacharya and his group have demonstrated a paradigm-shifting polariton laser that's fueled not by light, but by electricity.
