A Brief Biography

Michael D. Moffitt was born in St. Louis Park, Minnesota and raised in the cities of Richfield and Burnsville. He went to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to pursue his undergraduate studies, graduating summa cum laude with a B.S.E. in Computer Science in 2003. He then continued his studies at Michigan, obtaining an M.S.E in Computer Science and Engineering in 2005, and a second M.S.E. in Industrial and Operations Engineering in 2006. Moffitt completed his Ph.D. in the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Michigan working alongside Professor Martha E. Pollack, graduating in April of 2007.

Moffitt is currently working at the IBM Austin Research Lab as the recipient of the 2007 Josef Raviv Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship. His research interests include temporal reasoning, constraint satisfaction, combinatorial optimization, hybrid algorithms, planning, scheduling, block packing, etc. He is particularly interested in the relationship between these areas and neighboring disciplines, especially VLSI/CAD (e.g., placement and routing) and Operations Research. He currently leads a number of research projects along these topics, with publications appearing in the proceedings of several recent conferences.

In a past life, Moffitt was also an accomplished trombonist, and has been a member of the Michigan Marching Band, Michigan Basketball Band, Michigan Hockey Band, Michigan Volleyball Band, Concert Band, Jazz Lab, and Campus Symphony Orchestra. He currently resides in Ann Arbor with his wife Erin Moffitt.
