Major Service Roles:Association for the Advancement of Artificial IntelligenceI am currently President-Elect of the AAAI, with my term running from 2007 to 2009. I will then be President from 2009 to 2011, and finally, Past President from 2009 to 2011. (This commitment is longer than my Dean's contract!) In this role, I am presently:
I also enjoy serving as a Special Judge for AAAI at the annual ISEF (Intel Science and Engineering Fair). Computing Research AssociationI am serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Computing Research Association, an association of academic departments of computing (computer science, computer engineering, information, and related fields) and industrial and governmental laboratories in North America. Its mission is to strengthen research and advanced education in computing, to increase diversity in the field, and to increase public awareness and understanding of the importance of computing. My term runs from 2007 to 2009, and at present, I am:
NSF CISE DirectorateAs a member of the Advisory Committee for the National Science Foundation's CISE (Computer and Information Science and Engineering) Directorate, with a term running from 2006 to 2008, I participate in semiannual meetings aimed at providing input and feedback from the computing computing to the CISE staff. University of Michigan ADVANCE ProjectIn 2001, the University of Michigan received one of the initial ADVANCE grants from the National Science Foundation, to undertake programs aimed at increasing the representation of and climate for women in science and engineering. The University has since provided continuing funding for ADVANCE, which has now broadened its scope to include a focus on underrepresented minorities, and on all fields within the academy (not just science and engineering). One of the primary initiatives within Michigan's ADVANCE program has been the STRIDE Committee (Strategies and Tactics for Recruiting to Increase Diversity and Excellence), a group of senior faculty who have been trained in the literature on underrepresentation, and who lead workshops and otherwise provide advice on how to ensure a more diverse environment. I have been a member of STRIDE since its founding in 2002, and although I am currently on leave from it, I am still active in the ADVANCE program as a member of the advisory committee.
