I started playing chess seriously in summer 2004 and soon got addicted to
it. I used to play at 1700 rating on yahoo games. It's a fascinating game
with a ton of theory to learn. I like gambits, as they are full of tactical
maneuvers.
My favourite openings and Opening notes
- Vienna gambit
1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. f4 - This is my most
played opening. Originally developed by Steinitz (the first classical
world champion), this gambit can be quite effective if the opponent is not
expecting it.
- Smith-morra Gambit (against sicilian)
1. e4 c5 2. d4.
Excellent article on the gambit is available here
- Marshall Gambit (against Ruy-lopez) with black
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3
Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 O-O 8. c3
d5. Frank Marshall's classic game
against Capablanca (Capa won this despite the fact that he is facing the
gambit for the first time !)
- Sicilian, Richter-Rauzer Attack.
1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4
Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 Nc6 6 Bg5. This can be a surprise sharp opening
against unsuspecting opponents. Can get you into trouble if you don't
defend your queen side castled king. I was insipired by this game by Anand
and started playing this opening.
- Against King's gambit: I just follow Bobby Fischer's plan.
There are subtle dangerous variations in King's gambit, so make sure that
you understand them before playing this.
- Against
1. d4: Ah, the pesky d4 openings. I usually play
Queen's Gambit Declined Semi-Slav 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e6 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 Nf3
c6 against d4. Declined Semi-Slav is considered pretty solid.
