Starting in the Fall of 1998, I will be offering a new course, entitled, "Introduction to Quantum Electronics," (EECS 420). This course is in response to changes in our undergraduate program. EECS 420 will give the students an introduction to quantum mechanics, material science and quantum statistics. It is a highly application-oriented course. Basic concepts are developed and applied to a series of problems from modern technology. Problems are chosen from electrical engineering, chemical engineering, medical diagnostics, manufacturing science, etc.

EECS 420: Electronic and Optical Properties of Semiconductors:
In this course, we discuss the following aspects of semiconductors:

• Structural issues
  
• Techniques for bandstructure calculations
  
• Bandstructure in quantum wells
  
• Scattering and transport theory
  
• Monte Carlo method for transient and steady state transport
  
• Optical properties such as absorption coefficient and gain
  

EECS 320: Introduction to Semiconductor Device Theory:
This is an undergraduate course taken by students in their junior or (usually) senior year. It covers the following issues:

• Brief introduction to quantum mechanics
  
• Crystalline materials
  
• Bandstructure
  
• Fermi Dirac Statistics: Metals, semiconductors and insulators
  
• Concepts of effective mass, electrons and holes, doping
  
• Transport by drift and diffusion, continuity equation
  
• Theory of p-n diode and Schottky diode
  
• Bipolar junction transistor
  
• MOSFET and MESFET
