Toby Teorey is currently Director of Academic Programs in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He received the B.S. (1964) and M.S. (1965) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona, Tucson, and a Ph.D. in Computer Sciences (1972) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He served as an EDP Officer in the U.S. Air Force from 1965 to 1969, and as a White House Social Aide for President Lyndon Johnson from 1966 to 1968. From 1994-1997 he served as Associate Chair of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EECS).

Professor Teorey has conducted extensive research in the logical and physical design of relational databases, data warehouse and OLAP design, disk scheduling algorithms, computer system performance, and the development of an interactive analytical tool, NetMod, for capacity planning for large-scale local networks (e.g. Ethernet). The database modeling and design work provided the framework for his book Design of Database Structures (Prentice-Hall, 1982) with James P. Fry. He also directed the implementation of the prototype Database Designer's Workbench (1983), a forerunner of many of the logical database modeling tools of today. He was chair of the 1981 ACM SIGMOD Conference and program chair for the 1991 Entity-Relationship Conference. He is a member of the ACM and ASEE.
