EECS601: Intro to CSE Graduate Research (Fall 2022)

Purpose of this Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to encourage you to reflect on why you began your Ph.D. studies (or why you are interested in pursuing a Ph.D.) and compose your goals for graduate school. During your graduate school career, we encourage you to return to this reflection to asses your progress and regain sight of the ‘‘big picture.’’ This assignment was adapted from greatresearch.org.

Task

Write a response to the following questions:

  • Why are you pursuing a Ph.D.? If you are not currently a Ph.D. student, why are you considering graduate school? (1-2 paragraphs)

  • What do you think doing research involves? (1-2 paragraphs)

  • What research do you find most inspiring, or what results do you find most interesting? Why?

  • What researchers do you strive to emulate?

  • If you are new to doing research, some of these questions may be difficult to answer. This reflection provides an opportunity for you to seek out examples of good research and good researchers. By identifying this taste early in your career, you can strive to emulate these characteristics, in turn becoming a good researcher yourself. You are free to choose any examples you see fit, including research and faculty here at UofM.
