People Powering Innovation

We have been leaders in the science and technology of electrical and computer engineering since 1895. Our longstanding tradition of excellence in education and research is complemented by constant innovation and a vision for a better tomorrow.

As an ECE alumnus, you’ll join an elite group of 20,000+ individuals across the globe who love what they do – because they have the background and training to do whatever they want. They start companies large and small (Google, Nest, Cavium (acquired by Marvell for $6B), Ambiq Micro, Everactive, and countless more), are leaders in major companies (Qualcomm, Ford, Samsung, Intel, KLA, AMD, Broadcom, Xerox), develop new technologies and software (iPod, Chevy Volt, Google Glass, Samsung Galaxy, Xbox One, Lasik surgery, Photoshop), join academia, and explore new horizons in the field of their choosing.

ECE Strategic Plan

Michigan ECE’s strategic plan provides a path to a brighter future for our entire society.

Our faculty are leading the way in areas such as low-power computing, integrated analog and digital electronics, embedded systems, control, communications, energy and power systems, nanotechnology and nanomaterials, electromagnetics, radar remote sensing, solar cells and photovoltaics, quantum computing, ultrafast lasers, optoelectronics, plasma science and engineering, terahertz science and technology, MEMS, big data, cyber-physical systems, wireless sensor networks, computer vision, autonomy and robotics, and more.

We are working to improve health care, the environment, sustainability, security, energy, and transportation. We are discovering new innovations to improve medical procedures, to protect our land, air, and water, and to explore the future of green energy. Building on solid scientific investigation, we will continue to revolutionize technology in the areas of Energy, Environment, Information Technology, Security, Health, Transportation, and Space.

Our mission is to pursue the discovery, communication, education, and application of fundamental and applied principles of electrical and computer engineering to benefit society. See the complete ECE mission statement. Our staff share in our commitment to excellence. See the ECE staff mission and values statement.

Education, Innovation and Opportunity

ECE offers the following degree programs, all ranked in the top 10 in the nation:

  • B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering
  • B.S.E. in Computer Engineering
  • Master’s of Science, Master of Engineering, and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering

In addition to traditional lecture and lab courses, undergraduate students experience real-world applications through in-class major design projects, student-led engineering projects, and participation in competitive and interdisciplinary student teams. For example, our students are pushing us forward in team initiatives such as the Solar Car Team, MHybrid Racing Team, Mars Rover Team, and the new Robotic Exploration in Space Team.

ECE students get involved in research, travel abroad in international learning programs, perform community outreach, and start new ventures. They gain valuable experience in co-ops and internships.

Graduate and undergraduate students work alongside the brightest and most innovative minds in engineering. Research opportunities are varied and plentiful, fueled by more than $50M in annual research expenditures.

Our faculty and students generate more intellectual property than any other single unit on campus. We are innovators. Our faculty, often with one or more of their students, started 35 companies. Our alumni initiate countless more.

All of our graduating students are prepared to work in the global community, start businesses, and contribute to every sector of our economy.

Large multidisciplinary and multi-institutional efforts are underway in several laboratories and research centers (see a list of ECE Labs and Centers).

Our faculty and students are relentless in their pursuit of excellence: whether that means finding the best solution to a problem, doing something no one has done before, or simply applying all of their knowledge and skills to the needs of society.

We share our country’s commitment to training and educating the next generation of leaders and innovators; we know them as Michigan Electrical and Computer Engineers. We are ECE@Michigan – we aim to be the best, and we strive to improve the world in which we live, making a difference in the lives of people across the globe. These are the hallmarks of ECE@Michigan.
