In an area as diverse as Electrical and Computer Engineering, our faculty and students get involved in far-reaching and diverse activities. This fund pays for a great variety of educational activities and initiatives, such as additional lab and discussion instructors; state-of-the-art equipment and software; bringing outstanding alumni back to campus to interact with students; and other ways of improving the services we provide to students. This fund also supports undergraduate and graduate research.
It is often our young faculty that blaze new trails and pave the way for wide-ranging applications from single discoveries. In recognition of the importance of our younger faculty, we established this expendable fund to support our junior faculty. Their impact as role models, leaders, and innovators cannot be overstated. Supporting this fund will allow us to be more competitive in recruiting and retaining the best and brightest individuals – which is critical to our continued success.
In recent years, we have financially supported more than a dozen student teams and groups, sent students to leadership conferences, and offered departmental awards to some of our top students. The teams are competing and winning national and international contests. Our student groups provide Tech Talks and other professional opportunities as well as friendship and camaraderie. Supporting this fund allows us to continue and expand upon these activities.
This expendable fund supports commercialization efforts of the ECE Innovator Program, which is aimed at inspiring and facilitating the commercialization of research conducted in ECE. The program is an outgrowth of ECE as a hub of top-notch research and innovation that has led to significant commercialization of the intellectual property generated by its faculty and students.
Faculty and students in Electrical and Computer Engineering are leaders in entrepreneurial activities. ECE generates more invention disclosures than any other single unit on campus. These disclosures lead to patents and successful startup companies. Recent companies include Ambiq Micro (ultra-low power semiconductor solutions), PsiKick (ultra-low-power wireless sensor platforms to power the Internet of Things), Crossbar (very high capacity and high-performance memory for computing). Our history of successful startup ventures includes the company that developed Lasik surgery.
In recent years, ECE has greatly expanded its graduate program, especially by growing the master’s degree program. We are now educating about 700 graduate students every year, and would like to offer more ECE-based fellowships to our students. ECE looks much different now than it did 20, even 10 years ago. The technology is highly complex, and many employers are looking for that graduate degree. With your help, we can offer fellowships to continue bringing the best graduate students in the world to Michigan.

This endowment fund was established in honor of the outstanding teacher and scholar and in recognition of Prof. Haddad’s many contributions to the field of electrical and computer engineering (ECE). This fund supports graduate students in ECE.
About the Fund
Charles (BS ’63, MS ’65, PhD ’70) and Patricia (BA ’64, MS ’67) Krumm established the George I. Haddad Graduate Fellowship Fund to support graduate students in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The fund honors Charles Krumm’s former doctoral advisor and mentor, Prof. George Haddad, and his contributions to the field of electrical and computer engineering. Read more
The Computer Vision Seminar Series in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science brings internationally reputed experts in computer vision and related areas to an interactive forum attended by undergraduates, graduates, scientists and faculty.
This fund supports graduate students in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering:Systems, and Computer Science and Engineering.
About the Fund
Prof. George and Mary Haddad established the George I. and Mary N. Haddad Fellowship Fund to support graduate student education in EECS. Prof. Haddad (BSE, MSE, PhD, EE, '56, '58, '63) was Chair of the Department for nearly 19 years between the years of 1975 and 1997. He graduated 58 PhD students, and was a mentor and source of inspiration to countless others. His remarkable accomplishments and contributions to EECS are partially summarized in the FW2005 issue of EECS News. Mary Haddad was known for her devotion to the Department and the faculty. She was the social center of EECS for many years, organizing numerous parties for faculty and their spouses. She was always a kind and gracious hostess with a great sense of humor.
This fund provides an annual cash prize to the top first year graduate student studying VLSI.
About this Fund
Friends of Arjun Chandran (MSE EE '99) established the Arjun Chandran Memorial Fund to honor his memory. Arjun Chandran (1976-2005) studied very large scale integration, commonly known as VLSI. After graduation, Arjun spent five years in microprocessor design at Sun Microsystems in Austin, TX. His team members at Sun and TI established the memorial fund.
