Before Arriving on Campus

Create UM Uniqname and Email

You should have received an email with instruction on how to create your UM uniqname.  This uniqname will become your University’s email address.  All official correspondences from us will be sent to your University’s email address. Make sure to check it throughout the summer.

Check out your incoming class Facebook page to talk with other incoming students about housing, potential roommates, courses, etc.

Locate Housing

We recommend that you secure housing prior to arriving on campus.  A good starting place is:

Immunization and Health Records

Complete the FAFSA

This is required for Domestic students only. Complete the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for your fellowship if you have not done so already.

International students are not required to complete the FAFSA.

International Students

Make sure to read your emails from the International Center.  They provide a lot of information to assist new students with the transition to the University.

After Arriving on Campus

Learn the Bus system. It will make getting aroudn campus a lot easier. Click here for more information.

Obtain an MCard

This is your official University of Michigan identification card. Bring a photo ID to verify who you are.

Go to:

  • On North Campus, Pierpont Commons, Room B430
  • On Central Campus, Student Activities Building (SAB), room 100

Update Wolverine Access with your current personal information (address, phone number) and update it as it changes.

Meet with your Academic Advisor to complete your Plan of Study. You will receive your academic advisor at the ECE Program Information Session.

Make final course selection before the first day of class. Check your course information on Wolverine Access. Be sure the courses showing on your class list on Wolverine Access are the classes you are attending.

This is an event for you to learn more about the College of Engineering and what resources it offers on North Campus as well as meet other graduate students.

International Students

SEVIS Check-in

Mandatory for all students on a F-1 or J-1 visa status. Failure to attend can result in immigration issues.

This is an information session to review your obligations and responsibilities as an international student as well as provide the University with all necessary documents.

Currently, we are working to have check-in on North Campus. Check back periodically for updates.

Check-In Information - Includes session dates and times, what to bring with you, and contact information.
New International Student Workhops - The International Center plans various workshops to assist international students as they adjust to American culture. Workshops include banking, getting a driver’s license, and health insurance. We encourage you to attend all the ones that interest you.
