Class AB Power Amplifier with Cartesian Feedback

Alexandra Holbel, Chunyang Zhai, Fu-Pang Hsu

Abstract

This paper presents a 2.4 GHz Class AB Power Amplifier for use in ZigBee applications. The Cartesian feedback is used to improve the linearity of the power amplifier, allowing the power amplifier to be primarily designed for efficiency. The Cartesian feedback loop gives two independent I and Q feedback loops that are coupled only through their phase offset which will be compensated.  The up-converting and down-converting mixers use a Gilbert cell topology with strong linearity requirements for the down-converting mixers and performance as an ideal switch for the up-converting mixers. This power amplifier is realized by the 0.13um IBM CMOS process.
