DCO > Services > Software

Operating Systems

DCO must install the operating system on all new computers, unless other arrangments are made. To make such arrangements, please email help@eecs.umich.edu. This is in order to make sure the machine is secure and set up for future DCO maintenance.

DCO can install the following operating systems:

  • RedHat Enterprise Linux
  • Ubuntu Linux
  • Fedora Linux
  • Microsoft Windows
  • Mac OS (on Apple computers)

Other operating systems can be installed by request (assuming the appropriate licensing conditions are met), but may be unable to provide significant support for such a machine.

Free Software

The College of Engineering has a variety of programs available free to CoE students which can be found here.

We offer a variery of software and operating systems to the EECS community at no charge. This software can be borrowed by any student, staff, or faculty member within the department.

The following software titles are available as part of this program:

  • Ubuntu Linux
  • Fedora Linux
  • Various security applications
  • Various SSH/SFTP applications

Microsoft Software

As part of Microsoft Campus Agreement, we are able to distribute selected Microsoft application for use on machines owned by the department. This software can be borrowed by any student, staff, or faculty member within the department but cannot be installed on personal laptops or any other machine not owned by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

The following software titles are available as part of this program:

  • Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise (32 and 64 bit)
  • Microsoft Windows 8 Enterprise (32 and 64 bit)
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Enterprise (32 and 64 bit)
  • Microsoft Office Current Versions (Mac and Windows)
  • Microsoft Office 365 is available to all faculty, staff and students through the Computer Showcase*

*Your Microsoft 365 license will expire when your affiliation with the University ends

Technical Software

DCO has partnered with CAEN and ITCS to provide a variety of high-end and professional software to the EECS community. Access to this software is provided to DCO registered machines.

Microsoft Dreamspark

Access to many Microsoft software titles is available to College of Engineering students and faculty as part of the MSDNAA program. For more details or to check if you have access, visit the DreamSpark page on CAEN's website.

VMware Academic Program (VMAP)

Access to many VMware products including VMware Fusion and VMware workstation are available to College of Engineering students and faculty as part of the VMAP program. For more details or to check if you have access, visit the VMAP page on CAEN's website.
