EECS 203: Discrete Mathematics
Spring 2016
Overview
We will be using Piazza for asking (and
answering) questions. Please feel free to answer questions that aren't
directly dealing with solving homework problems.
Textbook
The official required textbook is Rosen, Discrete Mathematics, 7th edition.
Yes, it is crazy expensive (and heavy!). The reading and homework
assignments are from Rosen 7e. We recognize that Rosen 6e is much cheaper,
and not hugely different. You may use it, but only at your own risk.
Collaborate via Piazza to establish the correspondences between 6e and 7e
readings and assignments.

We will be using a class interaction tool called Piazza for questions &
answers, the course site can be found here. You will be able to post
questions, answer other people's questions, give or ask for clarification on
answers, see instructors' comments, etc. You can even ask questions
privately to the staff.
Readings
You will learn more if you read the reading assignment before lecture. You
are responsible for everything in the readings, even if it was not in
lecture.
Grading
Letter grades will be scaled according to our best judgment, based on the
final score distribution. The highest letter grade from these components of
the course is A.
Homework
There are two types of homework: Individual Homeworks and Group assignments.
Both are to be turned in as PDFs via GradeScope by 3pm on the due date.
Your homework score will be computed by dropping your lowest individual and
group grades. This policy exists to address issues such as illness,
broken cars, late buses, hungry dogs/cats, useless partners (for group
assignments) etc. In the event of exceptional circumstances on more than two
assignments, please see the instructor. Late homeworks will not be
accepted.
Students are encouraged to learn the math formatting tool LaTeX. It produces
PDF files of beautifully formatted mathematics. All group assignments will
need to be done in LaTeX unless the assignment specifies otherwise. For
individual assignments, hand-written homework, scanned to PDF, is
acceptable, but must be clearly readable. In any case, you must ensure that
each PDF file is relatively small.
- Individual Homework (10%): Individual homework must be individual
work. Students may study in groups, and may help each other understand the
material, but must not do or copy each others' homework or consult on the
assignment. Copied or nearly identical homework will be reported to the
Engineering Honor Council.
- Group Assignments (10%): Group assignments will generally
have a small number of very challenging questions and should require
discussion and significant thought. Group assignments can be done by 1, 2
or 3 students. We recommend working in groups of 3. The group should do
all problems as a group rather than breaking the problems up among the group
as these problems will tend to show up on quizzes and exams. You may change
your group for each assignment if you wish. You may not include
anyone's name on an assignment that didn't contribute to the assignment.
Nor may groups cooperate with other groups. Both are an Honor Code
Violations. Again, all group assignments must be done in LaTeX.
Quizzes (16%):
There will be 5 quizzes. Each will take 15-25
minutes at the start of lecture on the day of the quiz. Your lowest quiz
score will be dropped (we drop one case you miss a quiz, are late
to it, or have some other issue). Makeup/late quizzes will not be given.
If you are going to be out of town for some reason and know ahead of time,
you may arrange for a proctored quiz (often a service provided by Community
Colleges or Sylvan Learning Centers) at the same time as our quiz. If you
are traveling for a UM activity, a UM faculty member can also proctor the
quiz. Otherwise, you will need to use your dropped quiz. Quizzes are
closed-book, closed notes.
Midterm (29%):
The midterm will be given on during
class time. You may have one 8x11 page (both sides) for
notes and no calculator.
Final (35%):
The Final time and date are on the class schedule.
You may have two 8x11 pages (both sides) for notes and no calculator.
A rough measure of passing is that those within 1.75 standard deviations of
the median of the students receiving a grade would be considered passing. A
passing grade is a "C".
The A+ grade will be given to those students who earned an A and showed
a mastery of the material that goes above-and-beyond the class expectations
rather than the highest scorers.
Regrade Policy
Regrade requests will NOT be accepted more than 8 days after the homework
scores have been released.
Requests for a few more points for a partially correct answer will rarely
succeed because we want to let the graders be consistent across people. To
submit a regrade request use Gradescope. We reserve the right to regrade
the entire assignment.
