373 Project Posters
12/4/15
Poster Content
Posters can be composed using Microsoft Power Point.
Consider the following when making your poster.
- A Microsoft Power Point poster starting template is here. You do not need to use it. If you
do use it, you will likely want to make a number of changes. Feel
free to change whatever. Either way, make sure the class name and
title are on it someplace in a reasonable font.
- We will provide board you may attach your poster to. It is
32" by 40" (width by height).
- When making a poster please keep the following in mind:
- The poster serves 3 purposes
- Give people something to read when you are talking to others.
- Help draw people in (your project will probably do a better
job here)
- Give you something to point to as you talk to them.
- Given the above, you want good pictures and a clear explanation
of what is going on. But you also want to think "what visuals
would help me explain the project better?" You'll have the
project itself right there, so think about what you'd want to explain
that looking at the project wouldn't explain. Things like
high-level diagrams showing how data flows or things are connected and
graphs that show how you characterized a component could all be useful.
- Use high-resolution images. As a rule of thumb, if you
blow the image up to 2x the size it will be on the poster and it looks
grainy on the monitor, it will look grainy on a poster. Getting
this wrong is the most common problem we see with posters.
- Some images should be clear from 7' away. Other, more
detailed, images can be smaller.
- Title and major topics should be readable from 7 feet away
also.
- Avoid walls of text.
- Avoid text that goes all the way across the poster in a small
font. In general 80 characters/line is a good limit and 50-60 is
often better. Less than that can be painful too.
- It should be clear what images and text go together.
- Include a link to your youtube video (also rquired) on the
poster
Poster Printing
The department no longer support poster printing. You will have to pay for it yourself. The Duderstadt Goundworks
center will print a 32 x 40 inch color print for about $44. The Architecture school has the best deal for about $25. Be sure to allow 24 hours for either service.
Easels and backboards will be provided at the presentation.
Poster Examples
ESome examples from past projects are provided
below. They do not necessarly follow the template or suggestions
provided above. Many of these are sized for 36 by 40 inch so you will
have to resize them if you use them as starting points. To set
the size your poster:
- Go to the Design tab and select Page
Setup.
- A dialog box will appear similar to the one on the right. Enter
the width and height of the page. The slide orientation (portrait or
landscape) will automatically adjust based on the page sizes entered.
- Click OK.
- If the rulers are turned on (on the View tab check the Ruler
box), you will be able to see that the slide is now the size you
entered.
