How do I setup Thunderbird to view my EECS email? Print | Show source | History

  1. Go to Tools → Account Settings on the menu bar of your Thunderbird application. This should open a new window.
  2. Click the Add Account button on the lower left hand side of the window.
  3. Select “Email Account” from the list → Next
  4. Enter your account information as requested → Next
  5. Choose the IMAP option and add the full name (including the .eecs.umich.edu portion) of your incoming mail server → Next. If you cannot remember the name of your incoming mail server, please contact DCO.
  6. Enter your EECS Account username → Next
  7. You can leave the default account name or change it, if you would prefer → Next
  8. After verifying the information you entered → Finish.

Now you must change the server settings for your incoming and outgoing mail servers.

  1. Highlight “Server Settings” under the heading for your EECS Account on the left pane.
  2. Under “Use secure connection,” select “SSL.”
  3. Highlight “Outgoing Server (SMTP)” on the lower left side of the pane.
  4. Click “Add” on the right side of the window.
  5. A new, small window should open. Enter mail.eecs.umich.edu on the Server Name line.
  6. Check the “Use name and password” box and add your EECS Account username to the line.
  7. Select the “TLS, if available” option → OK
  8. Click OK on the main Account Settings window.

You should now be ready to send and receive e-mail with your EECS Account through Thunderbird. When trying to send or receive, the Thunderbird client might ask for your password. Enter your EECS password, and check the box for password management if you would like your password to be saved in the Thunderbird client. You might also see a window requesting certificate verification when trying to use your e-mail. Choose to accept the certificate permanently.
